Hands on learning
Hands on Learning is a Save the Children practical school program that builds wellbeing, engagement, and attendance by creating opportunities for students to discover their talents and experience success through significant and authentic hands-on projects.
“Our collective mission is to nurture strengths to grow curious and powerful learners. Hands on Learning provides an incredible opportunity to connect students to their strengths in a setting outside the classroom. Research shows that students who are connected with their strengths are higher in perceived competence, intrinsic motivation and effort intentions. In other words, students who are reminded of the strengths they possess to solve a problem feel more competent, more motivated and more willing to expend effort.” – RSC Principal Team.
Hands on Learning is by referral only from our wellbeing team, teachers and staff.
Wellbeing dogs
Introducing our Wellbeing Dogs at Rowville Secondary College, we have Bear at our East campus, and Penny at our West campus. The dogs are available for one-on-one emotional support and regulation for students and staff. This is part of the Dogs Connect program.
Bear – East Campus
Bear is a standard groodle (golden retriever and poodle) and will be turning 1 in March. Bear’s favourite snacks are cheese, yoghurt, scrambled eggs, ice cubes and dried pigs ears. He loves walks, sleeping and squeaky or soft toys. His favourite human is his dad (much to his mum’s disappointment).
Bruce – East Campus
Bruce has just turned 2 years old and is a 4kg Cavoodle. Bruce is intuitive, friendly and full of energy, has a happy little personality and loves cuddles. His favourite hobbies include tug, fetch, walkies and of course snuggling. Bruce’s favourite snacks include dried chicken, kangaroo and carrots! But be careful with your hair ties, I have a potentially dangerous obsession with those as well, so keep them away from me!
Penny – West Campus
Penny-Lane (responds to Penny) is 1 year and 3 months and is a Labradoodle. Penny is energetic, enthusiastic, loves to learn, and is effervescent. Her favourite hobby is to run, catch, chew, tug, “find it”, walks, swimming and of course sleeping. Penny loves eating kangaroo, lamb, fresh bones and rawhide.
Support from wellbeing can be accessed via:
- Staff-referrals (eg. house leaders and learning mentors)
- Self-referrals via email or in-person
- Parent request via phone or email.
The wellbeing Team will respect student confidentiality. However, there are times when ensuring student safety and/or wellbeing requires us to speak with a carer/guardian and/or other professionals. Wherever possible, this is done with the student’s knowledge.
Any queries about Student Wellbeing can be directed to our Wellbeing Coordinators:
